Voice UI Design Reference¶
When developing voice-enabled products, special attention should be paid to designing wake words and command words for voice interaction to achieve optimal recognition results. This document details our recommended design methods for voice wake words and command words, which we suggest users follow.
English¶
Wake Word and Command Word Design¶
-
It is recommended to consist of 2-4 words (4-6 syllables). Too short may lead to misrecognition, while too long may be inconvenient for users to remember.
-
The greater the distinction between syllables in command words, the better.
-
Conform to users’ language habits, use common expressions, and be specific and direct in content.
-
Avoid using everyday expressions such as “HI, HELLO”.
-
Avoid similar syllables. Words should have clear and loud pronunciation. For example, avoid using TURN-ON and TURN-OFF together.
-
Avoid using reduplicated words, such as “HELLO-HELLO”.
-
Negative words are high-frequency words in daily life that can easily trigger false recognition of wake words or command words, used for targeted anti-misrecognition and false wake-up prevention.
-
All words should be in uppercase. If a command word consists of multiple words, connect them with hyphens, e.g., HELLO-AIR-CONDITIONING.
Chinese¶
Wake Word Design¶
-
Typically 4-6 Chinese characters, with 4 characters being optimal. Too short may lead to false triggers, while too long may be inconvenient for users to call and remember.
-
The syllables in the command words should be relatively long, and the distinction between initials and finals of adjacent Chinese characters should be as large as possible.
-
Avoid repeated or similarly pronounced characters in wake words. Adjacent syllables should avoid linking sounds, meaning avoid having the final of the previous character be the same as or similar to the initial of the next character, such as “语音” (yǔ yīn).
-
Choose characters with clear pronunciation, high energy, and large mouth opening. Plosive sounds are preferred, and the fourth tone is recommended, such as “灌溉” (guàn gài).
-
Try to select less commonly used words as wake words to effectively reduce or even avoid false triggers.
-
Avoid using reduplicated words, such as “你好你好” (hello hello) or “宝宝开机” (baby power on).
-
To improve pronunciation energy, choose syllables containing plosive initials such as p, b, t, d, k, g, etc.
-
For finals, choose those with large mouth openings, such as a, ai, an, ian, ao, and avoid e, i, en, in, etc.
-
Chinese command words should only consist of Chinese characters, with no spaces, commas, or other characters allowed.
-
The platform provides wake word evaluation functionality. If the suitability of a wake word is rated as “excellent,” it is considered a good wake word.
-
Only one wake word is allowed per model. If multiple wake words are needed, optimize them separately and use the multi-network switching function.
Command Word Design¶
-
Typically 4-6 Chinese characters, with 4 characters being optimal. Too short may lead to misrecognition, while too long may be inconvenient for users to call and remember.
-
The distinction between initials and finals of adjacent Chinese characters should be as large as possible.
-
Conform to users’ language habits, use common expressions, and be specific and direct in content.
-
Avoid using everyday expressions, such as “吃饭啦” (time to eat).
-
Rarely used characters and characters without initials should be avoided. For example, both characters in “语音” (yǔ yīn) are zero-initial characters.
-
It’s best not to have modal particles in command words, such as “啊” (ah) or “呢” (question particle).
-
Avoid using reduplicated words, such as “你好你好” (hello hello).
-
Chinese command words should only consist of Chinese characters, with no spaces, commas, or other characters allowed.
-
Numbers in command words should be represented by Chinese characters, such as “调高一度” (increase by one degree).
-
If you haven’t determined the command words yet, we recommend selecting from the “Command Word Recommendations” in the documentation center.
Japanese¶
Wake Word and Command Word Design¶
-
A Japanese command phrase is recommended to consist of 4-6 syllables. Too short may lead to misrecognition, while too long may be inconvenient for users to call and remember.
-
The greater the distinction between syllables in command words, the better.
-
Conform to users’ language habits, use common expressions, and be specific and direct in content.
-
Avoid using everyday expressions such as “はい. おはよ” (hi, good morning).
-
Avoid similar syllables. Words should have clear and loud pronunciation, such as avoiding using 下げて (sa ge te) and 上げて (a ge te) together.
-
Avoid using reduplicated words, such as “ラボ-ラボ” (lab-lab).
-
Negative words are high-frequency words in daily life that can easily trigger false recognition of wake words or command words, used for targeted anti-misrecognition and false wake-up prevention.
